I was thinking about changing the way I pronounce Asia. Since Asia pronounced in Chinese is AH-Zhou, I was wondering what gives the English the right to call our continent Ae-sia. I think we should call the continent AH-sia. Sound it out- ahsha. I think it sounds better.
I want to ask non-Chinese Asians- how do you say Asia in your language? Does it have an AH or an AE sound?
If other asian languages besides chinese pronounce it with an AH sound, I don't see why we shouldn't reclaim a name of a continent that belongs to us

I'm a 30 year-old Italian male and no matter what people say, Japanese girls are the absolute EASIEST girls in the world. Personally, I have hit on numerous Asian women, and the only ones who give it up so easily are the Japanese. However, my dilemma lies in the fact that although I can get with the Japanese girls the easiest, I highly prefer the look and the character of Korean women. Can someone please give me some advice??? How can I get together with the Korean hotties??

I don't care if you're Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Thai, French, Moldovan, Senegalese, or Martian, if the woman is beautiful to you, she's simply beautiful period, no matter where she comes from. My girlfriend is extremely beautiful, intelligent, talented, and irreplaceable. She happens to be Korean and I am European. And plus, she's never had any plastic surgery, unlike the rest of you girls (especially Japanese).

AC Dropout,
Just a friendly correction. Short is pronounced Shoto or Shohtoh in Japan (not exactly but close enough) not shodo.

Asia is diverse and that's what makes it more appealing.

Just me:
The Japanese word that I hear most commonly in use is "ha-fu," (half) though I saw some documentary a while ago that was trying to push "daburu" (double). I tried "konketuzi" one time and no one had a clue what I was talking about until I wrote it down (regardless, I've seen this term in the newspaper ... maybe I just have a funny accent. i also read on some web site this term is derogatory?). "ai no ko" is the only term I know to be actually derogatory.
As for Chinese I use "²V¦å¨à" (same as Japanese konketuzi above - Mandarin hun4 xie3 er2, best I can spell the Cantonese pronunciation is wun huet yi, literally "mixed blood child."), a lot of HKers also say mix, but in HK style "mik-see". Malaysian-Eurasian Gal, Jay, Young, or anyone know if people still say "serani?"
FOB:
"im ashamed to be chinese. we always embarass ourselves in movies"
Wait, do you mean when we're on screen, or when we're in the audience? hahahahhha ...
T.H. Lien (disclaimer: my native language is English. if someone slaps you around for using these terms, it's your own fault).

Happa ?Hawaiian/Caucasian mix
Mestizo ?Caucasian/Indian mix
Eurasian ?Asian/Caucasian mix
Mulatto ?Black/Caucasian mix
And don't forget "Amerasian," which refers to the children of US soldiers and Viet/Chinese mothers from the war.
"I am mixed-race Chinese, born in Berkeley and raised almost entirely in South San Fran aside from a short stint in Malaysia"
Ahh... South City, right next to DC. You must know about them fly Pinays, huh?! SerraManila... woo hoo! Nothing tops them Pinays in my book.

FOB,
Where is you self-esteem and pride man? I have been living here for 3 years now and so far IN "REAL" life I have never seen any chinese embarass themselves. Chinese are one of the most succesful people here where I live they are Doctors, Lawyers, Engineers, College Instructors, and good at sports, I don't know about you but if I was chinese I would never even think of being embarassed.

T.H. Lien,
Wa si is the common term on Taiwan to refer to gas. Mei qi is sometimes used in a more formal sense.
There are even instance in Taiwan where they use Japanese words for their own use and are not used in Japan in the same sense. There is a slang term used called "shodo" which is the Japanese pronoucation of the English word "short." Taiwan uses "Shodo" in context to state someone is "crazy," "screwball," "not playing with a full deck of cards."
You can swap "shodo" with the chinese term "fa feng" (to have a stroke) in coloquial speech.
