I think it's unfair to castigate all Manchurians based on the government policies of the late Qing dynasty. I mean, did the Manchurians really do a poorer job then the Mings at the end of their dynasty? What about the foreign Yuan? Or end of Tang or Sui?

The Manchus invaded Korea twice for our support of the Ming, but when the dust settles, whether the Korean King pays tribute to the Han or the Manchus, it doesn't really make a whole lot of difference for Korea--I wonder if Manchu rule really did make the lives of countless number of Han peasants better or worse. (Well, aside from the obvious murder, loot, and rapes that usually accompanies warfare.)

All this talk of Manchus being evil as portrayed by popular chinese ficion and movies is a lot of hype--propaganda by Han elite who wanted to justify their control over the populace. I mean, you can read these sort of things even in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Can anyone really say Yu Bei was a better human being then Cao Cao? their wars brought mass famines that killed off so many chinese people, and for what? so Yu bei could unite china? CAo Cao could have done the same thing if Yu Bei was more peace loving. But of course Cao Cao is villified--and that's the history that is accepted.

What I'm saying is that extreme nationalism is no different from fascism. I think as a Chinese you should be more proud of the Chinese legacy of accepting people of diverse ethnicity and sharing what the Chinese people have accomplished.

Europeans were well advancing in technology even before the Qing. Afterall, Qing was only copying Chinese governance that has been in place for thousand of years, if anything, you can only blame them for continuing the legacy of stubborn inflexibility.

It is high time that the Chinese get over their complex about national humiliation and focus on their current strength, i.e. tolerance for diversity, and think about what it really means for China to be a great nation.

Wow, some of you are nuts. I've been posting mostly on the AM/WF site and people on that site are so much nicer and more understanding of each other than you guys are. How sad. The next time I hear an Asian complain that whites are racist, I'll refer him or her to this poll. I keep telling Americans a western democracy wouldn't necessarily work in China because it still needs a firm communist gov to control its distant provences, and it's many factions and minority groups. And they actually look at me in shock and say "China has minorities!?" Sohoh, you are just downright mean and belligerent which is quite ironic for someone adamantly claiming Manchurians are the "barbarians."

Umm anthropologist, how do you tell the difference between an ethnic Chinese child born in China vs one born in America? Nine times out of ten, just look at their heads. If the head is long, and protrudes outwards in the back, we have an ABC. On the other hand, if the back of the head is flat, than the child was almost certainly born in China. Is it the pillows? I think so. Whatever the case, it's long been a good indicator of not only Chinese, but generally all east asians.

And sohoh, shanghai is awesome. Shanghai is right smack dab in the middle of east China, and being a big city, it attracts Chinese from all around. This makes it a melting pot and allows it to produce variably attractive individuals to whom a number of various ethnic groups can find personable, since they can catch glances of what appeals in their own groups. Beijing has northern Chinese from everywhere, whether from Xinjiang or Harbin, and Hong KOng has Chinese everywhere up to the Zhejiang latitude. But Shanghai has it all, from both north and south.

ON another note, China is not as ethnically or culturally rigid. I have relatives as far north as Heilongjiang and as far south as Fujian. And they're constantly moving, as a second cousin whose parents immigrated to Fujian, is now living in Beijing. This is a good representation of all of China and its inhabitants. That's about the only way China could have remain unified after so long.

Okay okay, are you saying american style make up is better than japan, hongkong, korean, taiwanese make up?
You are very american oriented. You almost sound like a caucasian! Caucasian make up makes you look weird. China mainland will follow hongkong or taiwan in make up, korea will follow japan ,etc and vice versa.
Make up is different everywhere.
Caucasian make up is bad...

Back to height! Hey did you know... here in china, we see ABC's shorter than the mainlanders unless you were from rich descent coming to america? I think this could be true, after all, the first settlers were poor farmers, and had darker skin and different features than mainlanders. Now many are tall, but those people dress like they are from hongkong or taiwan... showing that they are taiwan/hongkong oriented. GoOd GoOd

Hmm you guys must be from America (ASian American site?) of coz) but the immigrants in canada seem pretty rich and refuse to speak english, although still be very hip in taiwanese, chinese way.

chinatown: I disagree on your comment about how beijing people are lazy and how northerners are incompetent. These people are hardworkers, especially at school because they do not come from a rich background. So they are motivated by the riches.

All this time that you've been puting down the Machurians for no reason...I've tried to maintain my respect towards the Cantonese and you to an extend. Since you don't share my integerity...I'll share with you some hard-core truth. The Cantonese (you)...have short legs..fat thighs..long backs...flat noses... wrinkled faces..and the women (including you) have mustaches. They make no effort to learn English, and they are the most greedy people among the ugly. Uneducated.

Chinatown.

So mainland people are lazy now? Just because you don't see any Beijing person working in a China Town doesn't indicate that they are lazy. They work very hard. Just not all in a China town setting where the Chinese purposely exclude themselves. Most people that come here from Beijing are here to study...they may be from humble backgrounds but difinitely more educated than the Southerners. Most southerners come to the US to live in China towns and many never bother to even learn a word of English. Who are you do comment on the sterotypes of Chinese FOBs? I know why you might think that northerners..for example Beijing people might be lazy. They are not as acustomed to physical labor as the Cantonese/Southerners who's profession revolved around physical labor even before they came to the US. The northerners..Beijing people were often educated students before they came here. But they still make all the neccessary adaption once they get here. Southerners are horrible in their adaptation skills,that's why they need to creat China towns when they get here....so they can speak Chinese...and exclude themselves from others. Chinatown...why do you even come to America?? I think most places in China are cleaner than China towns in tht US.

Are you people bashing others, because of your own insecurity? Where are your logic of the great 5000 years of Chinese civilization? Even the Chinese in China get along fine right now. Please come to your senses and think how pathetic you guys really are.
Okay, sticking to the topic right now, modern Asians all around the world are getting taller and taller every generation. Height wouldn't be a problem for Asians in the near future. Just eat right and exercise. Don't spend your time argueing which or who is taller, because it don't matter and certainly won't help.

Get a life, cuz you really needed one. You know pretty much about Chinese culture and China, but you don't act with the civilized manner to be consider one. One advise for you is to hook up with Princess Manchuria and see what a nice couple you two can be.

Don't act like Sohoh and try to realize that a majority of Chinese(including Cantonese) considers Manchurians and Mongolians and other minorities in China Chinese. And the same advise for you. Go out with Sohoh and maybe you two are more alike than you think you are.

You mis-read the post. They look as asain as all other asians. It is that they use makeup in a way that westerner appreciate. Foundation, Eye shadows, lip gloss, etc.
