Guys get a life. Chinese are mixed.
There are over 52 different minority groups living in China. Look at reality. Who won the war? Ghenghis Khan? he had empire. But now. Empire is gone. Mongolian population is less than Inchon, Korea population. China had great civilization. But 1.2 billion people divided three social class system. Just imagine population of poor people?? Korea is remained divided but Korea is hosting 2002 world cup with Japan. So does size matters? Korea has been invaded and conquered by so many countries. But the people, culture, language, and country still exist. So who is the winner? I think Korean persistance made Korea to be a winner! don't you think?

to a different KA:

Thank you for your sharing your impressive knowledge of Chinese history...

to Sohoh and critics of the Manchus:

i understand the dislike of many Han Chinese for the Manchus, as they were considered as "barbarian" and non-Chinese, and were fiercely resisted, especially by southern Chinese.

however, in defense of the Manchu Qing dynasty, it should be pointed out that the first 100+ years of their rule were among the most brilliant in all of Chinese history... especially during the reign of the emperor Kangxi when the Manchus consolidated their power and expanded Chinese territory to include Taiwan, Tibet and Xinjiang (its modern boundaries) In addition, the Manchus successfully countered Russian advances in Siberia and were able to eliminate the Mongolian threat to China. One has to admire the military abilities of the Manchus.

also China enjoyed over 100 years of almost unbroken prosperity after Qing Dynasty had established itself. note that China's population more than doubled from the start of Qing Dynasty until 1800s.

It was not until the Opium Wars (1840-1842) and afterwards that China really began to fall apart.

a different ka,

The reason why Han Chinese do not totally accept both the Yuan and Qing is because these 2 dynasties did discriminate against the native Han and other conquered races.

For example, the Han Chinese and Uygurs once had very amicable relations until the Qing Manchus set them both apart on an apartheid system of discriminating against Muslims (Han and Turkic). The Muslims revolts in the northwest were largely put down by southern Han Chinese generals and troops. The Manchus just sat on their thrones in Beijing fanning the flames of hate that continues to this day thanks to them. Not even the present government is able to put it out.

I can say the same in Tibet.

chinatown,

It's safe to say that AA attitude toward height is that most are obsessed with it. Look at all the boring, dull posts by all the boring, dull psuedo-historians. Anyway again height doesn't mean anything to the good person but everything to the person who wants that cushy job in Wall Street. Let me remind you Kobe Tai is only 5'3; Micheal Chang is only 5'7; Miki Sawaguchi is only 5'4; and Martin is another shorty.

different ka,

I agree with what you're saying. This sohoh woman is obviously a deranged psycho freak. I don't take her words seriously because she is so detached from the reality of modern China, it is a joke. I'm half-Northern Han, and half-Manchu and I have no problem identifying with both. In fact, nowadays, Manchus are overwhelmingly considered one of the Northern Chinese groups. I have never felt insecure about my identity, I never had to defend or feel I had to prove I'm Chinese, like many non-Whites have to prove they are American in this country.
This person Sohoh is obviously crazy, she has no grip on the reality of modern Chinese views. China is made up of 56 ethnic groups, not just Hans, and we're all Chinese. I can't believe I have to even repeat this fact to her, she's full of bullshit. Luckily, her views are non-existant in the real China. It seems like she developed her racist views in some twisted isolation in America.

I don't understand what you meant in your post.

Ethnicity or nationality means nothing to me when it comes to my sentiment of others. However, if I feel that another individual can not be dignified enough to display esteem to diversity, it becomes a predicament for me to show respect towards that person.

All you Manchus, Cantonese and Beijingers are puny compared to us Lower Northwest Tibetans. I stand 9 foot 3 and dwarf all of you. We are as tall as the Himalayas themselves.

Bad weather, thin air, long winters, plus a steady diet of yak meat makes us Lower Northwestern Tibetans hardy, tough and muscular. I can tear into mountain rock with my bare hands. I've wrestled yetis to the ground and thrown boulders miles into the sky.

And we are serene. Our Buddhist background makes us contemplative and wise. While you Han-chu-canto-jingers argue about who is taller than who. We Lower Northwestern Tibetans rest happy and content knowing that truly we are the giants among all men.

I'm Short in Tibet (but my Mom is 9'9!!!)

Angelique......    Friday, March 08, 2002 at 22:19:35 (PST)
Angelique (Manchurian Princess) ,

I see no point for you to stick up for us mainlanders. I know we are not lazy. Me look like a man? You have not seen me before. And manchurians have an adage of having no gender distinction. Your similar hormones (male/female) produce a unisex race of everyone being 5 ft 5. My cantonese sisters are generally pretty, especially ones in HongKong, they are prettier than any rugged warrior manchurian man/woman. Although they are not tall as the northern "Han", they are wayyy taller than manchurians and mongolians. Your hilly terrain causes your legs to be short, and your lungs enlarge to handle the thin air in your desert homeland. You manchurians have skin color like rusted metal, with dull tones. It does not compare with my shanghai skin, nor does it compare with summer skin of HongKong girls. My thighs are thin and I am tall, as of most shanghai girls, and hongkong girls are generally taller and more civilized than manchurians, you people need to hunt and crouch beneath rocks... plus your tiny horses which you depend so much on requires you to be small and tiny.

Erm... most hongkong ppl I know are rich unlike what you stated about them coming on boats... and sure northerners are well educated, if we exclude manchurians. Alot of cantonese wonder why us northerners are somewhat lazy, but it is only due to the uncivilized non han people surrounding china proper.

I've seen the Uygurs, Mongols and Manchus in China. Up close, I think the Uygurs look a bit more Han Chinese more than either the Mongols and Manchus. We must not forget that the region of Xinjiang (where Uygurs live) was where in the past, many Han and Tang Chinese peasants, ex-convicts and merchants travelled to and settled.

Yes, it's true. Americans lie about their height.

http://www.slu.edu/publications/gc/v6-10/news_13.shtml

Remember, whites make up over 70 percent of the American population (at least when this study was conducted). Blacks make up about 13 percent. Together, whites and blacks must make up about 85 percent of the survey population above.

It's been my personal experience over and over again, that Asians tend to be most honest about their height, and are the least likely to over exaggerate. But since AA's make up 4 percent of the American population, this usually does not draw attention.

I think everyone should forget about everything and be one big happy family. Wasn't this board supposed to discuss about height? Cuz I'm just seeing a bunch of animosity towards one another, ESPECIALLy when we're all strangers to each other! How old are we now???
Linda    Friday, March 08, 2002 at 14:57:48 (PST)
hey sohoh, I was on your side, but you turned around and bit my hand. If you would peruse over my posts, you'll note that I said that Chinese from Taiwan and HK have more style than their mainland counterparts, and that this can be seen in their FOBS, whom obviously could not have direct US influence.

And Angelique. THose were stereotypes. And how do I find support for them? My parents own a number of retail stores and a restaurant. There are many fobs who have worked for them.
That's where my generalizations came from. And I really don't consider students who immigrate to America as being of the FOBBISH sort. THey obviously have some sort of class not associated with typical members of their group. Of course when those GUangdong folks first immigrated to AMerica, they were poor, ignorant, uneducated, and right smack dab in the front line of racism. Recall the CHINESE EXCLUSION ACT. THereby, the only means one could contrive from such an existence would be either to band together in Chinatowns
or die at the hands of the white man.

maybe sohoh truly is pugnacious...I don't know. IF that being the case, than I can hardly blame the rest of you.

Sohoh and Manchurian princess -
I think the two of you are really insecure and ugly. If your pitiful face bothers you that much, go and get a plastic surgery done. Putting down other Chinese groups wouldn't help the way your short chubby body looks. Sohoh, go to north China and Manchuria and see if your view is really true or not. Manchurian girl, go to South China and Canton and do the same. Obviously, you two know nothing about China and Chinese culture.
