Now,
the resentment of Han for Manchu's, as has been pointed out on numerous preceding occassions, is most justified by Manchurian subjugation of native Hans. The mongols had control over China for a period as well, and as with the Qing dynasty, native Chinese were also recognized by the ruling group as being effectively subservient. They did wonders for Chinese, in terms of diplomacy. But this social prostitution of Chinese culture forced a society that never needed foreigners to give up its treasures, which it seems ironically, contributed largely to their later defeat come the time of Manchu rule (note the rudder, gun powder, compass, etc.)
In the long run, we don't owe these Mongolians very much, despite China's prosperity during their rule. And those manchu's? Can we take it for granted that the Ming dynasty would not have been better equipped with the successive centuries than the Qing had been? Would there even have been a sino-japanese war? An opium war? Would the society of China remained essentially static as it had under Qing rule (with the exception of pony tails for Han men)?

Angelique (Manchurian Princess),
Shanghai people are not Cantonese.
End of discussion!
"from an ABC who knows China and Chinese history ",
Well they did conquer neighbouring lands... introducing poverty and other things China in present time has to deal with! They did not advance in technology like the Han and Tang though.

bostonwildpie,
No one is arguing China does not contains many ethnic groups. So what if Singapore has many Chinese people? They dont ALL go for someone not Chinese. Same goes for Ancient China. Someone born in Beijing wont go all the way to Tibet and marry and tibetan women...
The ethnic groups have maintained their identity pretty well. We arent homo's~
Northern Han/Manchu ,
I am not American. I dont even have residence in America, no house no nothing in America! I have homes in Canada and China mister! And I never said anything about everyone being Han Chinese... I have been fighting to distinguish them! Imagine if Manchurian was considered to be Han.. BLECH! One thing that I have been saying was... Most Northern Han are taller than Manchurians , GuangXi people, etc... This is not an arguement about me thinking China is one people. You fell off the line of discussion already. Dont just jump in .... at least do it proffesionally~~ Choco Choco Mala De!
Angry Chinese guy,
Err Err Me is not sticking up for Cantonese and Southern regions... I am just saying... Us northern han chinese dont consider Manchurians as beautiful in China as she stated... They are not nearly as tall as us, and I said something about even the real guangxi people are even taller than manchurians etc, which probably sparked an assumption that I was those people! DONT TELL ME TO GO TO NORTH CHINA TO SEE IF MY VIEWS ARE TRUE... You say it like I think North Chinese are ugly or something! North China is so big, and I have been saying all this time... the most beautiful people in the world are from Beijing/Suzhou/Shanghai areas of China!
To you also... you fell of the line already !
chinatown,
ALright alright! I just get sensitive to the fact that if I get an impression that people think we look western with western make up or something... many things invented in Japan and Taiwan...
