Shandong people are tall, very tall, very very tall, compare to any asian group in America. All the fifteen year old looking kids were above 6 foot when I was eating in MacDonalds in Jinan. My cousin from Qingdao is 5'11, 200 with the thickest chest squarest shoulder I've ever seen, and he does not work out. Tianjin people are extremely lanky, all the cops were around 6'2 200, while every guy on the street were above 6 feet. People in Beijing are tall, but also many short people from many different areas since it is the capital. In Asia people are generally very tall as you move more east, and more north, tho Korean and Japanese are exception. I don't know about Dalian, I think most beautiful people in China are from Dalian, not sure. Also people in Jiangsu and Hebei are big too, Shanghai is more mixed. Don't stereotype Chinese unless you seen all 1.2 billion of us.

To those who suspect Chinese gov meddling, I believe the suspicion is unfounded.
The 7-footer Wang Zhizhi, and Yao Ming, are both only childs. If government really was aiming to produce tall basketball prodigies, wouldn't they at least allow their parents to produce more than one kid?

asian hapa,
I agree with your message. There are some short players in the NBA who succeeded. Tyrone Muggsy Bogues, at 5'3", was the shortest player ever in the NBA. He lasted I think ten seasons, and I read that in one season, he averaged about the same numer of rebounds per game as 7'6" Shawn Bradley did!
You're right, heart is more important than height. But, it's just that, based on the evidence I've uncovered so far, it seems like heightism is on the rise (no pun intended) in China. About the chinese govt involved in breeding a taller race - this is one time I hope I am wrong. However, I think there is a possibility it may be happening. I've presented my point, and I'm trying to bring some light into this.

anthropology student,
Hopefully we're reaching a concensus on what I'm trying to say. Yes, I am suggesting eugenics (in subtle forms) may be a contributing factor, in addition to nutrition, to the growth in China. Here's the definition of eugenics.
"A science that deals with the improvement (as by control of human mating) of hereditary qualities of a race or breed."
Discrimination in the chinese government can exist by favoring taller people. If the chinese govt freely allowed discrimination against shorter people (i.e. allowing employers to put height requirements for jobs, especially when the job doesn't require height - who has to be 6 feet tall to program a computer?), then shorter people have considerably harder times finding jobs. Thus, they cannot make a living, and can't support a family.
By allowing this discrimination to continue, the chinese govt has quietly but effectively controlled human mating patterns by allowing people with tall genes to earn wages to support families.
Remember, China is home to 1.25 billion people, and the government has been trying to limit population growth since passing the one-child policy a few decades ago. Getting rid of another 100 million or 200 million people can ease population pressures, while still maintaining enough people to run a strong country. So, if you're going to reduce the population, you might as well eliminate the ones with the "less favorable" genes.

Being tall is fine but ultimately it isn't that important. It's the culture of the US to put down short people but the funny thing is that the average MALE height is only about 5'10" (which I am around there). Asian guys may not always be 6'4" or taller but there's plenty of 5'9" to 6'1" guys around.
Being tall doesn't mean you'll be a good basketball player either. Unfortunately, most taller Asian kids (like 5'9" to 6'1") get stuck playing the "center" position when they are younger and don't learn the coordination needed to play other positions in the future.

my bro is 15, and he is only 5"8. i'm very concern about his height because he is the shortest among his dozens of friends( all asians). his friend came to visit from taiwan this spring break, and that foe is 6"6 (15 years old)!!! then, there's henry 6"5, 220+ lbs., jacky 6"4 140lbs, roger 6"2 200lbs, my young cousin 6"1 200lbs, couple more that are around 6", and the rest are about 5"10. they are all ASIANS (taiwanese and koreans mostly) and these kids are all 15 years old (should grow 2 or 3 more inches at least)....
we have a few blacks over here, and they are all average to short. mexicans are REALLY short!
