"Back in the days, if he walked into a Chinese resturant in our turf and started mouthing off, insulting Chinese people. He would have been treated like all the other white trash in the area and get jumped into an alley. Sure a few of us would be impress with how tough he would have been to bring down. But the conclusion would have still been the same "assault by unknown assailent, no eyewitnesses, no descriptions."
Sure, AC, you are the tough guy. You are talking about a bunch of guys jumping on Shamrock, many against one. And that is how you see streetfighting.
You also said earlier that is no way to defend yourself against multiple attackers.
So, what is there to learn about streetfighting? Just make sure there are more of you than them. If not, run.

"Overall these gangs only perpetuate a bad image of the martial arts and prevents some honest asian kid who is interested in learning about their culture."
Well, kung fu was developed as a means of fighting between warring parties, which were more or less like gangs. Besides, these days, I never see any gangs beating each other up on the streets with kung fu since, like AC pointed out, an UZI gets the job done much quicker.
However, the fact of the matter is, these kung fu schools have been in this area for quite some time, and have worked with the triads/tongs. You think nothing of it when they go lion dancing in peoples' restaurants and ask for money, right? You know what that is though? It's exactly like the triads going into the shops asking for protection money, which constitutes extortion.
Newer schools trying to establish themselves are always paid a visit by the more established schools. Friendly rivalry? NO! They are basically telling the newbies to align with them or face the consequences. Chinese kung fu has traditionally been a secretive, if not dirty and corrupt entity, and in modern times, it's no different.

[I guess that is why most Chinese parents don't want their kids to practise Kung-fu for the fear of them joining the latest "Flying Dragon or Cockaroach" gang.]
BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Does NYC really have a Chinese young gang called the "Cockaroaches"???...???
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!
that has to be one of the most idiotic gang names i have ever head in my entire life. bahahahahahahaha!!!
did the leader's father own a cockaroach infested restaurant in chinatown or something??? *lol*
[is it associated with the name of the gang they are in? like if they are called the 'ghost shadows', do they practice lost track boxing? or the flying dragons, do they practice dragon boxing or leaping prawn style?]
huhhhhh??? leaping prawn style...!???...!??? is there really such a thing??? gahahahahahaha!!!
Was the creator of Leaping Prawn bitter about people calling him a shrimp when he was a child? *LOL*
Jay... the hapa leaping prawn kung fu master! *LOL*

Jay,
Military troops are sent out into extensive simualation of combat situation prior to actual combat. In fact they practice their roles pretty consistantly throughout the year, during peace time also.
Because society isn't really interested in urban combat for the general populace. Those types of hi-fidelity simulation of fighting in the streets are not readily available. Hence, if you really want to learn to fight in the streets and suceed all the time, you will have to fight in the streets.

AM,
I did not suggest that the kungfu school are in affliated with Tongs in NYC, Triad doesn't exist here. At least not the HK version you are referring.
The relationship between the Tongs and the Youth Gangs are another issue. White people are kept as pets in this world. Dai Lo's like to keep a white guy around that can speak cantonese/chinese it a some twist concept of power. Its pretty stupid.
I stated that the Chinese youth gangs, recruit out of the kung fu schools and specialized high school (Sty, Brklyn tech, Brx Sci). For various reasons. Also a majority of the kids in these gangs individually would not consider state, national, or international calibur fighters. But that not the strength of a gang.
Also since they are recruiting, they composition of the members are all different. Some trained in TKD, some were in Muey Thai, some were in kung fu. Even some of the newer Asian gangs have members of different asian hertitage and speak english.
I'm pretty much outside of all that stuff now. When I got back to city after college, there were like a slew of new gangs in the asian community. But very few were backed by any creditable Tongs.

I just saw some earlier comments about Kung Fu schools affiliated with gang activity. A kung-fu school that my husband went to in Northern VA. near DC a few years ago reminds me of this. Actually it was more like a cult. They were very suspicious of anyone that did not attend the school, only associated with each other, the Sifu had to "approve" girlfriends or boyfriends of students, and students even went as far as to try to break up relationships that other students would have with people that were not in the school. It went far beyond normal boundaries of friendship, or school fellowship. Now he tells me that they consider him a "traitor" for changing schools. It was all getting too cultlike and creepy for us. He attended this school for 7 years and after he left, it was almost like he had to go through deprogramming! No joking, seriously. They still call him and try to make him feel bad for switching schools and even went to the point to try to get him to leave his family, telling him he is a traitor to kung- fu for having a wife and child now and not practicing 7 days a week as before. I know this is extreme, but his new school is welcoming to all, open, comfortable and is just as serious and focused on kung fu without being weird about it. Definitely check out schools and make sure you know what your getting into before signing a contract.
know what your getting into
