Do you know pencak silat? It seems to be a rather spiritual martial-art. Some practitioners perform their silat style during trance. I think the religious aspect makes it worth mentioning.

Know what you're getting into...

Can you email me the names of your husband's new school and the old cultlike school? My boyfriend is thinking of taking kung fu and I definitely don't want him to go to some psycho cult school. My email address is snoopyparsons@yahoo.com

I personally prefer Brazillian Jujitsu and am currently training in Yamasaki Academy under Francisco Neto in Rockville, Md. It's a fantastic school, great training and a great group of guys. I won't claim it's the end all be all of martial arts, there's no such thing. It depends on the fighter, not the art he was train under. So far BJJ suits my purpose for health and self defense.

One thing I like to point out, many of the current day martial arts are not how it was originally developed. Now many of them have become tournament based. Forms like karate and tae kwon do (took both before) is more for looks than use. The only best self defense is to be aware of your surroundings and be quick with your reflexes. So far that's what BJJ has trained me. Not to panick when a guy got you pinned down and legs spread open, or someone choking you from behind.

The Best Martial Arts is Kung Fu. Most martial arts have lost pieces of their history thus are no longer a complete system.

Actually,

I heard that one of the young Gracies from Brazillian Jiujitsu got killed by a gang in NYC after he was beating up their leader. Has anyone heard of that?

NHB,

Other than attacking the leader and keeping a ear out of the police sirens...it can get quite involved sometimes. Like I said, for any martial skill in a particular area, you either do it alot or have someone show you the ropes. But if you are going to go down this road make sure you are not a legal adult in your area yet, adult records are not sealed like minor records.

Not to be rude but what did you think street fighting was? Fireballs and uppercuts?

TSJ,

Yes there is something like that going on. But now a days there are so many white people involved with kung fu / and lion dancing. It not as shady as it use to be. You can choose which kung fu school comes to you to lion dance these days in NYC, without the fear of a rock in the window or a daughter being raped.

Jay,

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a gang named Roaches. When I got back from college there was a group call the "Mo Meng Pai" (No Name Gang).

Most of these funky name gangs are usually just a bunch of AA, instead of FOB immigrant kids. So they are having fun with the language.
