WHAT YOU SAY

You can't compare Cung Le and Frank Shamrock. They compete in different type of sports. Shamrock is MMA style. Cung Le is more full contact karate/San Shou.
But if you want asians in NHB, look at Sakuraba, Fujita, Inoue, and Koshaka. Given they're all japanese, but the japanese are very good at NHB.

I found this on a link to the SF Chronicle from Cung Le's website. Look under press from his website.

I knew he was a world-class athlete and a ferocious competitor, and so am I, so it seemed like a really good opportunity to get some training in," says Shamrock, recalling the meeting. "Well, he threw me on my head about 20 times in the first round. And he got tired of throwing me on my head, so he started kicking me and throwing me on my head. After a few more rounds, we hugged and said, ÔBye.' " (For the record, Shamrock says he threw Le on his head a few times, too.) Shamrock, who recently moved to El Segundo from Sunnyvale, says he enjoyed the challenge of competing against Le. The two have developed a deep friendship, sparring two or three times a week.

Toi San Jai, seems like you have a grudge against Cung Le.

San Shou is another name for Wu Shu. It looks sloppy because it's freestyle fighting. That's what makes it great and deadly. It's not like karate and TKD where every move is a perfect form. San Shou Kung Fu is more fluid, just beat the hell out of your opponent in any way possible with any kind of move or form, that's why it looks sloppy. For instance, you can do a combo like roundhouse to the head, and then a hook to the head, and then for the final move, you lower your body and reach around to his back and do a back throw/suplex so hard his head will hit the mat, if on the street, the concrete.

You see, this is what I'm talking about. FYI, Cung Le has a black belt in TKD and has gotten first place in forms for TKD. Thought you knew, but you had no idea. Go Cung Le. Make us proud!!

Hey Jay. Yeah, Vince Lacey is half Chinese/half Portuguese, I believe. He had the same sifu as Bruce Lee in HK. I don't know exactly what nationality his wife is, but his son looks more white than Chinese.

I saw the show the other night and it seems to me that KungFu is the most awesome fighting style in the world. Their Shaolin history is also interesting.

Is there anyone who knows where I can learn martial arts for free or is Martial arts available only to those who can afford it?

KM, 24,

I think they were in in 168 lb. class. Fighters are relatively slow in that division compared to lighter weight divisions. But the height difference they had is enormous for professional fighters. Also his opponent favored his left round house kick. Could have kicked Cung Le in the head a couple of times, but choose to feint. Would have to see to whole fight to figure his opponent out. But it looked like a pretty ugly fight.

I think the aikido guy was pretty real. As long as he did not do a Steven Siegal, its all cool.

Mr. Hann,

No doubt looks pretty fun. Those kids looked like they were enjoying themselves.

I saw a TLC show the other night "The 10 Best Martial Arts." It was pretty interesting. Shaolin Kung Fu was number 1. Karate was 2. Muey Thai was 3. Ninjitsu is 4 (there are ninjas on this planet still?). TKD is like 7.
Brazilian Jijusitu is 10.

I couldn't remember the rest. I wonder how they came to their ranking? Dart thowing? Its was pretty funny too.

TSJ,

Is Shane Lacey hapa?
Vince Lacey was Bruce Lee's classmate?
Under what instructor (in HK or Cali)?
Is Vince full British or half Chinese & half British?

AC Dropout and Mr. Hann,

I saw the discovery channel show the other night too. Actually the thing that most interested me was the part with the aikido master using chi techniques to control people. I don't know if it was real but it made me really curious.

The Cung Le fight. They said his opponent had been a favorite to win some circuit championship until he came along. I have to agree that the opponent did not look that good. He seemed tentative and he did several stupid kicks when he was not even in range. It did not seem like he knew how to run away when being attacked either. Then again, it didn't seem like either person was really mobile.

AC Dropout,

I saw that show the other nite. he's a lil sloppy but hey, he won. but man those shaolin teenagers were kicking some ass. they got me interested in taking san shou. those lil saholin kids were pretty crazy with those punching gloves. all in all, i say san shou is a pretty kick ass sport thats useful and a good confidence builder.

BigSquill,

I don't go to Cung Le's school because I'm busy with other things in life, such as going to school.

As far as the sparring goes, Cung Le is so fast and know so many moves and skills it is virtually impossible to not get hit.

San Shou kicks ass    Friday, April 05, 2002 at 11:02:31 (PST)
"Yeah, he's kind of arrogant, but without him, martial arts will never be the same and the way it is today."

How has he "revolutionized" martial arts? Other than in the martial arts community (and in San Jose), no one knows who the hell he is. He competed in lower rung PPV's, but he has never been on UFC or Pride. If he is so hardcore, why doesn't he step up? There are lots of other sifus in the Bay who have no respect for him because he doesn't carry himself in the correct manner. Other young masters like Shane Lacey (son of Vince Lacey, Bruce Lee's classmate) would give him a good fight. Even in San Jose itself, Frank Shamrock is right down the street. I dare him to challenge him.
