WHAT YOU SAY
[This page is closed to new input. --Ed.]
to ki,
I would have to say that judo or juijitsu (a lot of people fake to be masters at this so be careful) would be the best for self defence. It has a lot of grappling which is very important to have. Karate usually isnt that effective and tae kwon do isnt eather. If you can find a place that teaches Jeet Kune Do, take it, its the most effective because its philosophy is, accept what is useful reject what is useless. You learn the most effective and fast way without that much strength to put someone out.

Hey dude, if you want to take aikido, i strongly suggest against it. If anything take judo. The concepts are the similar (using leverage and the strength of your opponant) but akido is focused on the very small movements which unfortunately are almost impossialbe to execute. Granted the long time akido expert is a formidable fighter, however it is purley defensive not offensive which means, if you fight more than one guy, you will lose. Also the learning curve in akido is the highest in any real martial arts. To become profcient it takes much longer than other disciplines.
If you want to kick ass and learn how to fight for real then study JKD, but dont be so strict, The best move so far in my arsenal is the simple techinques for defense and offense. Kick to the groin, eye jab, throat jab, biting, and the most effective grab the scrotum and try to pull it off!!!.
Akido IS NOT COMBAT EFFECTIVE. In real life fighting, exaggerated motion is most realistic, effective and efficient.
Learn to fight dirty dirty dirty. If you do chances are you will win, even against a superior fighter. Also the bottom line is build muscles. Strength and size make a huge difference. So what i am saying is NO akido, try judo or JKD.

SOG,
I use to fight in the street a lot in HS and JHS. And during my college years I was a hopeful for the USA national team in TKD. I was training 3-5 hours a day for 4 years.
(my exploit in college fighting in the street are listed in the Goldsea True Section).
Looks more like you're upset that you can't throw any other kick other than a front kick effectively in a fight.
Your statement reads like this for boxers...The only punch effective in a fight is the right and left cross. The jab, hook, and uppercut are useless. I once was in a fight hit a person with an uppercut and he wasn't hurt at all. But then I hit him with a cross and he fell like a brick. (see how stupid that sounds).
I know the Olympic Coaches TKD in the USA and Taiwan. I met olympic fighters in TKD, boxing, judo. Trust me, even if you are an athletic genius, you would lose with your attitude in the ring.
Look if you're so good go to the USA Olympic Training Center. Ask for Master Han Kwon Lee (Olymic Male Coach in TKD). Respectfully ask him you want to spar a person in your weight class. Or if your man enough tell him you want to Round Robin the whole team.
Don't forget to break the school plaque over your knee when you leave.
You're a joke and a punk. Real fighters see you come in and out of their gyms/dojo/dojang everyday. The only reason they don't fight you is because even after they give you a solid whooping there is not money, prize, or ranking involved.

lh,
You watched olympic hopefuls in TKD. Or did you watch a local match of TKD.
That's like apple and oranges. It's like watch people who are ranked 1 - 25 in boxing and watching people who are ranked 1000 - 2000 in boxing.
No one who is a hopeful in state or national level TKD, throws flashy or high kick in the beginning.
It is only towards the end of the match when they figured out their opponents or have the obvious advantage that some showing off might occur.
Side kicks are not really effective combat kicks. They are good to see how much training a person has. Because beautiful side kick requires the coaching of someone. It not like you can learn a side kick by watching TV. Some militaries in Asia will determine a person martial aptitude by the side kick.
I'm not saying sparring with full TKD rules will help you in a street situation. But TKD people who are training for State competition and National competition will have an advantage of sparring all the time.
A more proper analogy is you would not play NBA style Basket Ball in the Street Ball.
