"The girl was Joan Chen. Her bio is on goldsea.

Shanghai is now coming back as the entertainment and economic center of China. HK pretty pissed about that. Since they thought SAR status would have prevented this from happening."

AC:

It was on again yesterday night, and the girl with the short hair is Arianne. Is Joan Chen in it too? I just see bits and pieces, but not the whle thing.

Yeah, Shanghai is making a comeback, but are they making movies yet? HK will forever be attached with the movie capital label because of all the cult classic kung fu movies.

TSJ,

The book is titled "The History of Hong Kong, From the beginning to the year 1882" by E.J. Eitel.

This book was published in HK so don't expect to find it in you local library or a bookstore in SF or even Amazon.com.

You're better off browsing some Chinese bookshop that sells English books such as Eastwind or maybe Ng Hing Kee. The book focuses on HK as a British Colony. It also mentions how the British perceived each of the different groups of Chinese in HK, and how that affected their places of emigration in the West.

For example, the Puntis such as the Toi Sans were considered enemies to the Brits. They rebelled against them and many settled in America. However, the Hakkas were allies and friends to the English. Why is it that many Hakka Chinese settled in the UK and not America? The Hoklos such as the Chiu Jaus were the most ruthless and backstabbing of all (just like today..hahaha..). Chiu Jaus were pirates back then, they smuggled and attacked the British ships without any warning. It's funny how Chiu Jaus loved ships and were rivals to the Brits in the Opium distribution. Interestingly, Chiu Jaus settled in countries like France and the Netherlands, which were rival countries to the English.

Better yet, since you are traveling to HK as you have mentioned before, try the HK Museum of History that is located on 100 Chatham Road South, Tsim Sha Tsui of the Kowloon area. It has exhibitions relating to the different ethnic groups of HK Chinese. For example, you could see and compare the house of a Toi San family with a Chiu Jau or a Hakka Family.

Dude, I suggest you visit the place. It's next to some shabby science museum like the ones you visited as a kid.

Every Cantonese person needs to know the history of their people and its relation to HK and the West.

TSJ,

Most people find Taiwan chicks to be more down to earth at times. HK chicks are caught up in crazy beat the jones mentality at times. Not that Taiwan chick are immune from behavoir either.

Hey LSD. What is the name of that book? It sounds pretty interesting.

AC:

"There was a B movie called "Year of the Dragon""

Haha... yeah, they show this movie on Skin-O-Max all the time. John Lone and Mickey Rourke. I forgot the girl's name though. There is one quick nip shot of her. It's a pretty crappy movie though. The Corruptor is barely decent, but a lot better.

LSD:

"In America, the Toi San use to rule, now it's the other Cantonese groups and maybe in the future, the Fujianese might overthrow us."

There aren't any Fujianese or Fukienese, however you pronounce it on the west coast, so it will take awhile before they overtake us. Well, it's not a bad thing that other Cantonese are taking over because I consider all Cantonese to be one. When people ask what I am, I say Cantonese or HK, but I never say Toi San. Not too many people speak Toi San wa around here except a "poa" and a "gung." It just makes you sound uneducated. Remember, Toi Sans straight from Toi San don't get along with HK Toi San either, not to mention the ABC's not getting along with the immigrants.

Cantonese vs. Taiwanese - I think is just a money and status thing, like you said awhile back. I don't think culturally or historically, they have much beef. In this day, and age, in the modern free world, historical conflicts have little bearing. They are only significant in undeveloped areas. The only thing that does the talking now is money. Look at all the European countries that used to fight. They are all cool now.

Actually, Shanghai should have been the jewel of the Orient instead of HK. It was supposed to be the movie capital too. However, the Japanese taking over in WWII screwed all that up. I think China resents the fact that HK took all the limelight.

I've been jockin' Taiwanese girls a lot recently. They sure do know how to dress. They are second only to HK girls in the best dressed department.
