WHAT YOU SAY
[This page is closed to new input. --Ed.]
Never Learn,
That kinda of hard to say. I know when I was studying in the Mainland. Teacher just addressed me by last name without the first name or even a title like 'student' or 'mr.', which was kind of weird.
If you ask your co-workers address you by you name and they don't then it is disrespectful. But in a corporate environment 'nicknames' pop up all the time. There was an italian american call Amour, everyone called him 'Love' at our engagement.

Elaine Chao is married to a conservative white guy."
- Political Observer, I saw elaine Chao on tv last wk being interviewed by some white guy on Good Morning or somthing like that. But he kept addressing her as 'Chao' without Ms or Misses or anything preceding. I do recall how sometimes at work white coworkers would address me the same way, by my last name but not the other coworkers. I believe this to be another form of disrespect by the whites.

TSJ,
Not to diss your hometown...but in my opinion, SF is a provincial town just like any place outside of NY and within America. It has diversity, but not in a way where that these groups are associating with one another in some form besides racial tensions.

Elaine Chao is married to a conservative white guy. GOP Phil Gramm is married to a conservative asian woman. What the hell do you expect? These people have their own agenda and it's certainly not yours.

SF AF,
That's why Asians need to block vote and choose a worthy candidate.
I agree that many Asians in power don't do anything for Asians. In fact some of them hurt Asians. Look at Elaine Chao or Phil Gramm's wife. What have they done for Asians?
That's why Asians need to take charge. Select a good candidate and all agree to vote for him or her.

Just because we have an Asian mayor doesn't mean that he/she would be sensitive to Asian American issues."
- SF AF
This is true. Even if there were a non white president, doesn't necessarily mean that that person would be sensitive to any issues other than who can keep them in office and sadly, how to line their own pockets before they retire. This is the way it has been for the past few presidents and seems to be a new trendy outlook for people in power. The 'what can you do for me' attitude or 'what can I do for myself'.

Latina Observer,
yes, asian have a lot of power in california (fremont, milipitas, san francisco, san jose and it looks like oakland is becoming a burgeoning asian city). There are pros and cons to this in my opinion.
It does bring diversity and economic power - asians tend to bring about considerable industrial and technological change.

I have a question? Do asians have any political power in Bay area? If so, what are some of the high ranking positions?

Just because we have an Asian mayor doesn't mean that he/she would be sensitive to Asian American issues. I would rather have a non-Asian mayor who actually addresses issues in the Asian American community than an Asian mayor who comes knocking on our door when he needs "the Asian vote" and then shuns us after getting elected.

"When are we going to get an Asian mayor in San Francisco? I think it is about time. Asians should bloc vote and choose a worthy candidate that will finally represent a huge population that has been relatively silent in the area."
There was an article in the local paper explaining how even the most Chinese district in the city, Sunset, might not even have any Chinese representation in office this time around. I guess most of them don't even care. Their idea of taking over the city is bombarding it with restaurants and businesses rather than getting into politics.

Haha... okay Ed. Sorry to stray off. Oh, but hey. Here's a connection. I know people in the real estate industry who sell houses exclusively to HK stars. I know a lot of them have homes in the Bay Area, in areas such as Pleasanton, Danville, Palo Alto, and Fremont. Chow Yun Fat is among them. I never got any exact details on who has a houses here or where they live, but I believe some others with houses here are Faye Wong, Kenny Bee, and Jenny.
LSD, well, we are actually going to Beijing first. I think that is the main destination for the trip. We will also see Suzhou and places like that, and I think Xian, where all those tombstone statues are. I haven't been to HK for a long time. I really want to go back.
F4... they can't sing or dance or act! They are just the Taiwanese version of Backstreet Boys (even though BSB does have some talent), something for the teenyboppers to swoon over. I don't know any Japanese bands, but they are comparable to Korean bands such as HOT, Shinhwa, and Sechskies. And the funniest thing is that the song F4 is best known for, the theme song for Meteor Garden, isn't even sung by them!

[Let's get back on topic. --Ed]
TSJ,
One clarification...Chow Yun Fat is Hakka. I guess I received the wrong info about his roots.
Chow grew up in a dirt poor family. He was a sales clerk for a electronics store in HK, eventually that led him to stardom. Correct if I'm wrong, I think someone in the store discovered his expressive character which would be suitable for an acting career.

We are....Tang,
Now are the Minnan Speakers (Hoklos) such as the Chiu Jaus and the Taiwanese descendants of the Tang?
I don't want sound bias...but the Minnan dialects are the most fluid and graceful of all of the Southern Chinese dialects.
Cantonese sounds edgey, Hakka sounds crunchy, Toisan sounds slippery...hahaha..but Chiu Jau is a crispy!
TSJ,
Hahaha...dude, when was the last time you were in HK? I'm sure you want to go back and check it out!
If you want a tour of Shanghai, intially should have bought plane tkts to HK, and then buy a tour package from there on. I'm sure it's also cheaper!
WTF...F4! Hahaha.could you these guys really rock?...I mean the only successful Chinese Rock band I know of is Beyond.
F4 reminds me alot of those cheesy pretty boys from Japan like Smap! I never heard their music, but I have seen them in Chinese magazines.
