Mohamed Sultan Road: Singapore's Hottest Nightlife Scene

Eastside
UE Square, 207 River Valley Road, #01-51/52

The decor is homey and comfortable, what with weathered wooden furnishings and walls lined with photos of bygone days, but the crowd is up-to-the-minute in fashion and music. In addition to some excellent specialty martinis, Eastside also boasts a refreshing terrace with six big-screen TVs and a view of all the people passing by.

Madam Wong's
28/29 Mohamed Sultan Road

This is another club that exploits a deep-seated craving for local color in its kitschiest glory. The 50s Hollywood ambience, retro music and the rumor that the place is haunted by Madam Wong's ghost keeps the place packed to capacity with recent grads on weekend nights.

Mohamed Sultan Road has become a magnet for Singapore's younger revelers.

If you want to move up a couple of notches in taste and ambience, check out this nouvelle variant on the Old Singapore theme. Don't let the club's steel-and-glass exterior fool you. Inside it's filled with genuine antique objets from Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam set off by chic lighting and furniture. The crowd tends more toward less raucous, upscale professionals in their 30s.

If you're bored with the predictable antics of the straight set and want to take a walk on the wild side, check out Singapore's hippest gay club. It also attracts the more hip and artsy elements of the straight set as well as the flambouyantly gay. What keeps the club fresh is its policy of redoing the decorative theme every couple of months and not always tastefully. The least memorable: plucked and dressed rubber chickens hanging from the walls.

Tivoli Beer Bar
11 Unity Street, #01-23, Robertson Walk

If you get tired of attitude and just want a nice place to chug a few cold beers while watching the action on MSR, check out this little gem. You can either sit on the patio or go out to the patio and enjoy comfort snacks like hot dogs and pies with your drinks.

CU
15 Mohamed Sultan Road

Guys who don't have the nerve or knack of chatting up strangers can retire to enjoy the lovely lasses carrying drinks in skimpy outfits in this male-oriented club. Don't be surprised if some of them take to the top of the long bar to strut their stuff.
