WHAT YOU SAY
[This page is closed to new input. --Ed.]
Japanese and Korean are similar because the originate from the same root language. If you don't speak Korean or Japanese, the easiest way to tell the difference, is that Korean sounds like Japanese slowed down. Defnitely my Japanese culture shares much with Korea .... this is probably why we have the reputation we have with the Korean people, as being rivals.

Asian Guy and ROK man,
Thank you very much for the info. I feel a lot more informed, and not so silly about asking the question in the first place. I'm also rather impressed with the amount of knowledge you both have on the origins of the language.
Thank you for detailed descriptions you gave. I found the languages you both listed with similarities to Corean(Korean)to be pretty interesting.
Perhaps our school system should include more varied world history/language courses on the secondary school level. It would be nice if all americans were a bit more informed on the language and/or history of other cultures. I believe europe is already fairly well covered. But I guess there is always the college level.
Anyway, thanks again. If you do happen to see the movie please let me know what you think. I must mention that I also liked the movie's portrayal of strong, butt kicking, dedicated women.

Speaking languages, I want as many opinions as I can get. Okay here it goes. I am planning to study Mandarin at my local university, but there is a school that specializes in Chinese language AND culture. The thing is my college Chinese is included in my tuition & the STL. Chinese Language School is on the expensive side. Should I go on to the STL. Chinese Language School (I mean they do offer a lot more) or settle for what I can for the time being? I'm at a financial crossroads, people!!! HELP!!!

How many of you all are in serious relationships (BW/AM)? I am and I'm frustrated because interracial dating in my city consists of two types DOMINANTLY- BM/WW and AW/WM.
I saw one other BW/AM couple in the gym and I wanted to go give them a hug, but couldn't really tell if they were "a couple". It just feels so lonely when you don't see other couples like ours, but then again, I would not want to be part of the more common dating demographics because then we would just be the "typical" interracial couple.
People are so intrigued by my boyfriend and I. We are always getting compliments, especially on what a "stikingly beautiful" couple we are. We are actually showered with affection when we go out. I'm sure these types of compliments are rare for BM/WW or AW/WW, so in that sense it feels good.
But even if I just knew personally, one other BW/AM couple, that would be nice. My boyfriend seems to always have his eyes open for them, but for now, he at least appreciates it when he sees BW/WM couples. The day we see one together, I think we will just go up to them and introduce ourselves. Does that sound crazy?

Thank you "Asian guy" for the nice "basic" lesson on the languages and for the nice ending comment about black women. I think you Asian guys are gorgeous too!
