WHAT YOU SAY

What is all this anti-black nonsense? The most beautiful woman I have ever seen in my life was a black latina. I didn't even know she was latina--I assumed she was black American--until she spoke. My god she was hot.

You know you're Black when... ,

Thank you for your honest answer and for overtly voicing your point. I really admire this virtue in a person and I'm glad that this whole game had positive outcome.

As to the disdain SOME Latinos display for Blacks and other I do find it offending and embarrasing. Being a colorful Latino located in north America I've confronted racism and I understand your frustruation. Please keep in mind though that many Latinos making these comments are very likely to be from the US. There's obvious racism towards many of them in the US and I guess that they cling onto racism and pick on other weak groups to build a bit of self esteem. Not all Latinos are like that and me and my immediate family are a prime example of it. You may know well that Latinos are not the only ones that pick on other groups either. Everyone wants to be on top of the world and it's too bad the top is not big enough for everyone.
My approach for fighting racism is a bit less confrontational and perhaps too didactic for some people. Your approach was quite creative, but it can be dangerous too. I'm glad this little mind adventure has ended up with a good note and I hope people visiting this forum learn something from these exchanges.

I still believe that racism/colorism in not as pronounced in Latin America. I lived 15 years of my life there and I didn't have a clue that I was of color until I went to the US (moved to the northern neighbour later on). I guess a lot of my comments are based on my experience, observations, and upbringing though. It would be great if you could look and understand Brazilian and some old Mexican soap operas. You would be surprised by how Blacks are portrayed. Of course, they were/are full of invalid assumptions where Blacks are mostly seen as hard working, weak and suffering individuals. However, these soap operas had a more positive message than what the US Media has had for the longest time (ie. Black and Latinos portrayed as criminals). They had a simple morale which went on the lines of people are people regardless of color. You may think that these are JUST soap operas, but in Latin America these are vehicles which promote positive changes (not all soap operas of course) in society. I have more examples about color issues in Latin America that may change your opinion, however I shall end this for this is not the appropiate place.
There's a lot of truth in what you say though and I cannot dismiss it. THANK YOU FOR THIS LESSON.

PEACE TO EVERYONE

PS Mejia "Latin" and it meaning has its roots in the language of the region more than anything else. I believe you're getting mixed up with language and the play of words in a word being translated and later modified. It makes sense for a Black person to call himself "LATINO AMERICANO" which in the US would be Latin American and its short form Latin. Sometimes words lose the meaning if you shorten them too much and sometimes opinions have to be supported by facts ;)

I tend to attract women of every kind and race, this would include Asian, White, Latinas, Black, etc.(i guess because of my features, I have a Asian/Hispanic look). Most people mistaken me for a hispanic or hapa.

"Mulattas( European/black mix) should be classified ONLY as "black." Hasn't America always went by that "one drop" black rule?? So when speaking of Latinas or Hispanics on this site , we should only refer to Hispanics from North, Central and South America with NOOOOO black blood. Since majority of Hispanics are European and Indian mix."
true latina

The "one drop" black rule is the biggest load of crap I have ever heard.
I wonder which dumb a** bastard of long ago wrote up that law. If I'm half Chinese and half Caucasian, according to the "one drop" rule I'd be considered Chinese??? What the hell is that? A lot of Chinese people can't even tell I'm part Chinese. I never even heard of that "one drop" crap rule until I moved to the U.S. Mainland from Hawaii. To me it's bullshit and was obsolete the day after that idiot thought it up.

I believe I write quite articulately, and legibly. Was there something I typed NOT to your understanding YKYBW, and LM? Or shall I say it was NOT to your liking? Does it bother you so terribly that I can confidently say that I do not have black blood running through my veins? What is wrong with being proud of who I am? Is it only acceptable for Blacks to be proud of being Black? I cannot tell you how many Black latinos have been prejudice of me because I "look white." I am ashamed to say that there was a time when I would feel the need to justify their cruel, ignorant, racist remarks by assuring them that I too am mixed. And I of course did that for acceptance. But I was seldom accepted by Black latinos.

By the way, My Spanish ancestors were Nordic caucasians, and my French ancestors were anglo French. I am also very proud of my native Puerto Rican heritage.

It seems to me that you have an inferiority complex which you haven't come to terms with yet. I hope you do one day.

Latinas have the most beautiful smile.

I think misbegotten, corrupt, cowardly, and inept Fugimory should be extradited, made to pay back every centavo he stole from the dead broke Peruvians and to have his slanty eyes burned with acid.

To Latino man,

The majority of Europeans are mixed, but it is acceptable to say that they are still white, and that is obviously because they look it. Most educated Americans know that. And the Moor's were both Arab and Berban ( A white north African tribe.) But of course you have to believe there was mixing with Blacks there too. Spanierd's are "White." There are plenty of nordic Spanierd's living in Spain as well as meditteranean. IF the Spanierd's aren't white, then neither are the Italians, Greeks, many of the French, and plenty of other countries. Don't forget that there is more than one race of caucasians too. Meditterean's look much different than nordic caucasians.

"Mulatto or mulattas" can be of ANY European and black mix NOT only "Spanish" although Spanish intermixing with Indians or blacks are far more due to the colonization and slavery.
Majority of Hispanics in Central America are "mulata?????" Are you sure? I always though most are mastizos.

you sure?    Friday, July 27, 2001 at 18:03:21 (PDT)

Mulattas are of Spanish and African blood. Mestizoes are of Spanish and Indian. A majority of the Hispanics in Central America are mulattas, myself being one though I was born in Miami. My family is Nicaraguan. How dare you deny us the right to claim our heritage just because my skin is slightly darker than yours? I am just as much of a latina as you are, but no where near as ignorant.

well...id have to agree, that a 'latino/a' would be of native and spanish descent...the very word latin...should indicate that...a black/native couldn't really call himself LATIN in my opinion....
Mejia    Thursday, July 26, 2001 at 23:29:40 (PDT)
Fujimori was only president of Peru for 10 years not 30 years, but he was a bad one. He was a dictator. Latin American countries with a pretty sizable population are Panama,Peru, and Venezuela.

LationMan,

I respect your opinions and I RESPECT the way you have presented them. To date you are the ONLY person claiming Latino descent who has approached this issue in an intelligent, articulate manner.

My point here, I got tired of Latinos denigrating Blacks and Latinos with Black heritage. That is my only point. I got sick and tired of all the rhetoric, everything BAD is equated to Black Blood so to speak. Therefore, I made it my mission to prove that the Black Blood so many Latinos apparently have disdain for runs through many of their veins as well.

I must say being called "B***** and "Ho" and "fat" also fueled the flame because to me, it showed the OBVIOUS disdain many Latinos have for Blacks.

PS One thing I disagree with you on, is racism and colorism is VERY PRONOUNCED in Latin America as evidenced by this thread.
