Imai breaks out with a no-hitter, Asian American talent ignites Thunder-Spurs series, and Si Woo Kim flirts with a sub-60 round.
Tatsuya Imai etched his name into the record books with a historic pitching performance that led the Houston Astros to a combined no-hitter against their state rival, the Texas Rangers. The rookie right-hander, who has battled right arm fatigue this season, initially struggled by walking three of the first four batters he faced. However, Imai quickly adjusted his rhythm, retiring 16 consecutive batters over six spotless innings. Reliever Steven Okert handled the seventh before 23-year-old Alimber Santa made a spectacular major league debut, firing two perfect innings to lock down the 9-0 victory. The historic night secured Imai’s second win of the season and marked the 5th combined no-hitter in Astros franchise history.
In Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals, the second unit of the Oklahoma City Thunder delivered an unforgettable performance, setting a franchise postseason record for the most bench points in a single playoff game. The scoring clinic was ignited by Filipino American shooting guard Jared McCain and Vietnamese American big man Jaylin Williams, who each dropped career-playoff-highs of 24 and 18 points, respectively. The San Antonio Spurs bounced back in Game 4 to tie the heated series, setting up a pivotal Game 5 showdown. Combo guard Dylan Harper, who was just named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team, was a key contributor as a sixth man earning a +25 rating in 21 minutes.
Si Woo Kim put on a clinic at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, threatening the tournament record books before settling for an incredible 11-under-par 60 in round 2. The Korean star tore through the course with a barrage of birdies, putting himself on the precipice of golf’s magic number of 59 – which has only been accomplished 14 times. However, a minor misstep on the final hole led to a closing bogey, keeping him just one stroke away from the historic milestone. Despite the bittersweet finish to a spectacular round, Kim ultimately finished the tournament in second place, taking home a handsome prize of over $1.1 million.
