Profession: Lawyer
Birthplace: Taipei, Taiwan
Position: Head of Asian Practice of Shepard Mullin Richter & Hampton, Los Angeles
American investment into Asia is a trend that will only continue to grow, believes Jack Liu. As coordinator of the Asian practice at Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton, he is well poised to ride the wave. He has already represented a series of Republic of China government-owned banks in establishing branch offices in California. Now he has turned his attention overseas. “I plan to use my Asian background and the firm’s expertise in Asia to represent American business interests doing business in Asia,” he says.
Liu was born in Taipei in June, 1958. He received a bachelor of law degree from National Taiwan University Law School in 1981 and went straight to military duty, serving as a Second Lieutenant for nearly two years. Following an honorable discharge in 1983, Liu came to the U.S. as a graduate law student at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. Two years later, he was an associate at Mitchell, Silberberg & Knupp. Still single, Liu has time for the finer things in life: museums, concerts, gourmet food and cultivating a collection of exquisite French Bordeaux wines. His secret? “Work very hard to maintain your success.”
