With a historic Australian Open run and over $2.5 million in career earnings, Learner Tien blends tactical brilliance with a veteran’s composure.
At just 20 Learner Tien is recognized as a tennis phenom whose ascent up the ATP rankings has been swift since turning pro in 2023.
In November he secured his first singles tournament win at the 2025 Moselle Open, earning $700,000 in prize money. Starting the year at number 120, Tien’s win at Metz propelled his rise to number 28 in the world and number 4 in the United States.
A major achievement was reaching his first ATP 500 final at the China Open in September via an upset over then number 18 Daniil Medvedev.
The southpaw’s 2025 opened with the historic distinction of becoming the youngest player in 20 years — since Rafael Nadal — to reach the fourth round of the Australian Open.
Tien’s young career has earned him $2.5 million dollars in total prize money.
At 16 Tien became the youngest player since 2005 to compete in the US Open men’s singles main draw, a feat made possible by his title win at the 2022 USTA Boys 18s National Championship.
Tien’s lauded composure, footwork, and backhand were molded by coach and advisor Michael Chang, himself an Asian American tennis legend who had won the French Open in 1989.
Tien turned pro after a semester at USC in which he was 3-0 in singles matches.
The Irvine, California native is the son of ethnically Chinese immigrants from Vietnam. His father is a real estate lawyer and his mother is a teacher — the inspiration for his name.
