Bokksu Can Bring Japan to Your Front Door

Bokksu was founded in 2015 by Danny Taing with his mind set on giving anyone around the world an opportunity to try authentic Japanese snacks. He is the son of Cambodian-Chinese refugees and was born in New York City and raised in New Jersey.
Taing never intended to be an entrepreneur. He graduated with a Bachelor’s in Psychology and Communication and a Master’s in Sociology from Stanford University then went on to work at Google as a marketing strategist.
His path shifted after studying abroad in Japan at Waseda University where he became fluent in Japanese and developed a deep appreciation for the culture and cuisine. Taing made the decision that he wanted to make it easier for the rest of the globe to discover and enjoy authentic Japanese products. And so the idea of Bokksu came about.
With the help of his mother, Taing started off filling every subscription box by hand, adding a unique postcard with a handwritten thank you note in each one for the 20 customers that he had. Now he oversees a team of around 60 employees with a warehouse in Japan that packs and ships 20,000-30,000 boxes a month to 100 different countries.
His love for these snacks and the culture that they carry has built Bokksu into a $45 million company. They have partnered with many U.S. retail stores as well, bringing the best snacks to everyday shoppers at places like Hot Topic and CVS Pharmacy.
Bokksu’s commitment to tradition and heritage is what makes the brand so special. With all of the snacks being sourced from small family businesses in Japan, we are getting treats that hold history. Bokksu has become more than just a subscription box and truly a cultural bridge. Each package holds a small piece of Japan that invites its receiver to experience, taste, and learn with traditions that have been around for centuries.
