Asexual Japanese Cooks Own Genitals for Posh Dinner
By wchung | 25 Apr, 2025

Japanese artist Mao Sugiyama sold portions of his own braised, seasoned genitals to five Tokyo diners for 20,000 yen ($251) apiece. The dish was tastefully garnished with a side of mushrooms and parsley.

The diners enjoyed a piano recital and a panel discussion before digging in. The dinner was meant to raise awareness of sexual minorities.

Sugiyama, 22, is an asexual, and had had his penis, scrotum and testicles surgically removed voluntarily, then had kept them frozen in his fridge for two months before cooking them under the supervision of a professional chef on May 13. Information about the event came from Sugiyama’s Twitter feeds and local police.

Sugiyama had initially considered eating the genitals himself before deciding to sell it.

“I am offering my male genitals (full penis, testes, scrotum) as a meal for 100,000 yen ($1,255),” Sugiyama had tweeted earlier. “I’m Japanese.

“The organs were surgically removed at age 22. I was tested to be free of venereal diseases. The organs were of normal function. I was not receiving female hormone treatment.

“First interested buyer will get them, or I will also consider selling to a group. Will prepare and cook as the buyer requests, at his chosen location. If you have questions, please contact me by DM or e-mail.”

The dinner in Tokyo’s Suginami ward attracted about 70. All but five guests settled for beef or crocodile. Sugiyama’s genitals were consumed by a 30-year-old couple, a 22-year-old women, a 32-year-old man and event planner Shigenobu Matsuzawa, 29.

The genitalia were very rubbery and tasted of very little, reported the diners.

“It’s a once in a lifetime chance, so I decided on the spur of the moment to do it,” Sugiyama Tweeted before the event.

Pictures of the event were posted on Sugiyama’s blog, but later removed by him due to “privacy considerations”.

Guests signed a waiver releasing Sugiyama from liability in case they became ill after eating his genitalia.

The dinner organiser joked before the event that Sugiyama would be posting his recipe online.

Sugiyama, an illustrator, has also had his nipples removed. As an asexual he did not have his male genitals surgically replaced with artificial female ones as is the common practice in transgender procedures.

Money raised from the dinner is expected to cover the cost of Sugiyama’s surgery.

Suginami Police were contacted but said no law had been broken.
