Beijing Requires Registration to Buy Knives
By wchung | 24 Apr, 2025
The city of Beijing has begun requiring all stores to register customers before selling them knives, according to Legal Evening News. The burden imposed by the regulation has caused some stores to stop selling knives.
The new law is apparently aimed at preventing the kinds of violent attacks that have led to a number of highly-publicized killings during the past two years. However, the regulation appears difficult to enforce among smaller stores which are continuing to sell knives without complying with the registration requirement.
The regulation requires a customer who wishes to buy a knife to provide a verified name and an employer’s name. The purchase of knives is now prohibited for children or adults with mental illness or a behavioral disorder. The regulation also requires retailers to alert police if a person in these categories attempts to buy a knife.
Many stores have deemed the registration requirement too burdensome and have stopped selling knives altogether.
